Opera Remote - Frequently
asked questions
What is Opera Remote?
Opera Remote is a solution from Raven Computers Ltd that utilises the
power of Microsoft Windows NT /2000 to significantly enhance the capabilities
of Pegasus Opera.
Run Opera at high speed over: Dial-up connections, slow links and wide
area networks:
- Dial in from home
- Access Opera from a branch office
- Access Opera from a laptop with a mobile phone
Opera Remote will also allow you to run Opera on low specification
hardware and potentially on dumb terminals.
As Opera Remote is resilient to failure, you can turn a client off
in mid transaction without damaging your data.
Automatically recovers from line disconnection.
Supports unlimited users. Now with: local printer support, faster access
and load balancing.
How does it work?
Opera Remote is a client/server application which uses thin client technology
and runs as a service on Windows NT / 2000 (Server or Workstation).
Opera Remote runs as a service on Windows NT / 2000 (Server or Workstation).
Client PC's can connect to this service by any network method that supports
TCP/IP, including Windows Dial-up Networking. Each client runs a virtual
DOS session on the server with its console on the client system. The
Opera Remote client runs on Windows 95 / NT / 2000 / XP workstation
and supports all colour, mouse and keyboard functions. Opera is actually
executing on the server, not the client: only screen images, keyboard
and mouse data pass between the client and server. If the Opera data
is on the same server as Opera Remote, then a dial-up connection can
actually be faster than a machine on the local network.
Which versions of Opera are supported?
In order to obtain satisfactory performance over slow links, Opera Remote
only works with the Opera Dos client. It will however, function happily
in a mixed environment where local users are running Opera for Windows,
and remote users are running Opera for Dos.
Are any changes required to Opera?
Opera runs unchanged under Opera Remote, we do however disable the graphics
screen displayed when Opera is first loaded.
What if the connection is lost?
Opera Remote incorporates a graceful shutdown capability, if a connection
is lost between client and server then the server will feed Opera with
a combination of keystrokes to shut it down. The client can then simply
reconnect and log in again.
What about a Novell Network?
Opera Remote will only run under Windows NT, however there is no reason
why Opera itself cannot be on a NetWare server. The Windows NT machine
would simply have a network connection to the NetWare server. Using
Microsoft's Gateway Services for NetWare only one NetWare user licence
is required for any number of Opera Remote clients.
What about ISDN?
Opera Remote generates no superfluous network traffic and so is ideal
for ISDN WANs where line costs are only incurred when traffic is passing
over the network. We even provide a utility to turn the clock off to
minimise screen updates.
How do I print?
Opera Remote allows the user to print data from their own local printer
and shared printers on the network.
How secure is it?
Windows NT incorporates C2 level security, before Opera will even start,
the user must have a valid login to the server. Opera then has its own
user level security. Once Opera is terminated then the Opera Remote
session can be automatically terminated.
What about Windows 3.11?
The Opera Remote client requires a Windows 95, Windows NT , 2000 Pro
or XP workstation, it will not run on Windows 3.11. There are a number
of third-party Telnet clients that can be used but they lack the full
functionality of our Client software.
Can Opera Remote be used for other applications?
Opera Remote is customised specifically for Opera, however it is also
possible to run other DOS applications. Please contact Allan Wallis
on Tel: 01274 200404 to discuss the possibilities.
Can Opera Remote be used over a Local Area Network?
Opera Remote makes few demands on the client hardware since processing
takes place on the server. A client PC that would normally be too slow
to run Opera effectively can be given a new lease of life with Opera
Remote.
What about dumb terminals?
While they do not support Opera’s full range of key-strokes and screen
attributes, dumb terminals can prove useful in certain circumstances.
What about very large installations?
Load balancing is now available. For large installations, Opera Remote
supports multi-server configurations with automatic user distribution.
What about Support?
We include 30 days free support in the purchase price which commences
from date of purchase. Raven's ALF, however, provides for ongoing support
and free upgrades as new enhanced versions of the product are released.
How can I try it for myself?
If you have an Internet connection on a machine running Windows 95/98
or Windows NT then you can download the client and try it for yourself.
